Balayuk Cave

Balayuk Cave is a karst system discovered in 1959 and thoroughly explored in 2012. It is located 2.5 km (1.5 mi) southeast of the eponymous necropolis.

Exploring the little-visited chambers

The entrance is located in a karst funnel, 50 meters (55 yd) long and 6-15 meters (6.6-16 yd) wide. Inside the cave, there are 40-70-degree slopes. The floor is covered with rubble and blocks of limestone. The cave has three halls at depths of 28, 75, and 120 meters (92, 246, and 394 ft). The deepest hall ends in a dead-end with a small blue lake. The water in the lake is cold – about + 10-13oC (50-55oF). The water is salt to the taste. You can also see the white salt marks spread everywhere close to the water. The descent to the lake takes about 1-1.5 hours, and the ascent is only 30 minutes.

Nearest natural attractions

The picturesque Karynzharyk Hollow is located 52 km (32 mi) away from the cave. It is a part of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve and is under state protection. The hollow’s three hills standing amid the Kenderli Salt Pan are what draw tourists to this place. Kenderli dries up in summer but in spring it’s covered with water, which reflects the surrounding landscape creating a stunning view. On the hollow’s rocky cliffs, you can take a glimpse of mouflons, goitered gazelles, and Ustyurt argali.

How to get there?

Balayuk Cave is located 350 km (217 mi) away from the city of Aktau. The road is muddy and swampy in some places, so be sure to travel in a group of at least 2-3 off-road vehicles. In case one of the cars breaks down or gets stuck in the mud, you should always have a spare one.

Also, the cave is located 20 km (12 mi) away from the Turkmenistan border, so you should carry identification documents. You constantly need to monitor your route and road signs in order not to get into the territory of Turkmenistan. This is quite possible since the GPS does not always work properly.

Preparing for the trip

The most important thing when preparing for the trip is to obtain permission to visit the Ustyurt Nature Reserve since you will pass through it on your way to Balayuk.

It is recommended to take 60-meter (200 ft) long ropes and flashlights with you. Special equipment is not required. It is cold inside the cave so take some warm and comfortable clothes with you. Also, you should wear slip-resistant shoes that ensure ankle support.

You should also bear in mind that the cave is very remote and there is no mobile service. The area is unpopulated; there is only a hunter hut 15 km (9 mi) away from the cave. Be sure to stock up on food, water, and gas.
